NanoLeaves Lab is a group of synthetic chemists settled at the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Pisa. The research activity fits in the fields of Organic Chemistry and Materials Science. At NanoLeaves Lab, we develop new materials and explore their new and exciting applications in the fields of Chemistry, Technology, and Optoelectronics. We are interested in the preparation and functionalization of organic materials including biomaterials from natural sources, with an eye to nanocellulose and cellulose nanocrystals and to other biopolymers.

Our research group actively participated in the Chemistry for the Future CFF2026 conference, held at the University of Pisa from 1–3 July 2026, contributing to the vibrant scientific exchange that brought together young researchers working across a broad range of chemical sciences.
In October 2025, Prof. Alessandra Operamolla from the University of Pisa visited the University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB) – Faculty of Mechanical and Process Engineering (FGMGP) – as part of the Erasmus+ KA171 project coordinated by the University of Pisa.
On the occasion of the 2025 edition of the conference Chemistry for the Future, organised by the second year attendees of the Doctoral School in Chemistry and Materials Science (DSCM) of the University of Pisa, the NanoLeaves group has been active and participative, with four poster communications and two flash presentations by our team members.
On May 30th 2025 Laura Spagnuolo successfully defended her PhD thesis in Chemistry and Materials Science entitled “Mechano-enzymatic extraction of cellulose nanocrystals and their functionalization for antibacterial materials”.
